Our Experience with Embark Dog DNA Test Kit (+ $40 off when you buy a kit!)

The rescue we adopted Stella from described her as a “retriever mix.” When people would ask me what kind of dog she was I would often say that she’s a perfect mix of a lot of different breeds. I suspected that but I didn’t know exactly which breeds….until we used the Embark dog DNA test.

Embark is the most popular and accurate dog DNA kit you can buy. An Embark Breed + Health dog DNA test enables a dog owner to learn about their pup’s breed, ancestry, health, relatives, and more with a simple cheek swab.

I’ve been wanting to have her DNA tested for over a year but Robbie thought it was a waste of money. He said, “It’s just going to tell you she’s a DOG!” Yes, but what KIND of dog??? He finally caved and bought me an Embark Breed + Health dog DNA test for Christmas.

I was nervous about getting her DNA sample but it was an easy process. All you have to do is rub a swab on the inside of her cheek and mail it off! Embark confirmed when they received it a few days later.

They kept in touch by sending update emails throughout the process so we always knew exactly what they were working on.

We received the breed results exactly 4 weeks after mailing her sample.

My prediction was a lab/pit bull mix with a little bit of Boxer, and I was correct about all three breeds! But Stella has quite a few other breeds mixed in as well! See for yourself!

I was amazed by all the detail we got. In addition to the percentage of breeds, we received analysis on her physical traits, screening for 190+ genetic health conditions, a family tree and even a list of relatives.

Embark has the world’s only Canine Relative Finder that connects you with other Embark dogs that are related to your pup based on the percentage of DNA they share. We received a list of 30 of Stella’s relatives, including one dog with a 47% DNA match! He’s considered “immediate family” as related as human full siblings or parents / children. Another 29 dogs were identified as Stella’s “close family” which is as related as human first cousins. Embark will continue to update her list of relatives as more dogs are tested and added to their database.

  1. This is awesome! I have three rescue dogs and like you we just kind of guess what they are mixed with. I will definitely be mentioning this test to my husband. Thanks so much for sharing your post with us. Stella looks like a really sweetie. #HomeMattersParty
