Warm & Cozy Fleece Dog Coat
So how cold is it where you live? We’ve seen temperatures lower than I can ever remember. It was 19 when I got up this morning at 7am! I’m a southern girl who would never survive if I lived up north!
I sewed a fleece dog coat for my sister Ellen’s dog Ginger and she wore it on her walk yesterday so she would stay nice and toasty warm in these frigid temperatures. I’m actually glad that she’s getting some use out of the coat this week because there’s not many days cold enough to wear it.
With her partner in crime, Lily. (No…I didn’t make Lily’s coat.)
Don’t you want to sew one of these coats for your dog? I used Simplicity’s It’s So Easy #2087. The pattern comes in a small, medium and large size suitable for dogs weighing between 80 to 110 pounds and body length between 30 to 34 inches.

However, Ginger is smaller at only 54 pounds but I was able to adjust it to fit her. I made the small size, but trimmed about 5 inches off the back, did a custom waist measurement for her belt and overlapped the front pieces by several more inches than the pattern called for. The only other alteration I made was I rounded the back corners just because I thought that looked better than the square corners as shown on the pattern.
Look how excited she is about her new dog coat! Her tail is wagging so fast it’s blurry. Oh wait…maybe she’s just excited to go on a walk. Naaaaa….it’s got to be the coat!
My Dad’s dog Bowen was also a recipient of one of these coats. I will see if I can round him up soon for some pictures while it’s cold enough to wear it. I just wish it would snow!!!
