Family Photos 2012 + The Sullivan’s Island Dress

Sullivans Island Dress

There hasn’t been much sewing or crafting going on around here lately with a newborn in the house. So I thought I would share one of my favorite past projects with you.

The Sullivan’s Island Dress is my masterpiece! It’s the very first dress I ever made for Sophie and by far my favorite. I made this in spring 2012 for her 2 year old portraits. That right, spring 2012. I have not been sewing that long!

My wonderful mother in law had been teaching me how to sew and this was my first attempt at sewing something myself….or “by my own self” as Sophie would say! With this being my first major project, it took awhile to complete but I can’t be happier this how it turned out. Sophie looked beautiful wearing it.

The pattern I used was New Look 6718, option B which included a pattern for matching bloomers.

The fabric came from my mothers in law’s stash. The blue is the most gorgeous shade of bright turquoise and has a pleated look. I trimmed the dress in brown polka dot fabric with pink rick rack accent trim.

I really have a great mother in law. My own mother passed away when I was very young and I feel so lucky to now have this lovely lady to call mom. I have learned to sew thanks to her patience and great teaching skills (plus a lot of Pintrest tutorials!), and it has become one of my favorite things to do in my free time. If you’ve never sewn before and have a desire to learn, you CAN do it!

Below are some of my favorite shots from our 2012 family photo session taken on Sullivan’s Island, SC:
