Audrey’s Handmade Nursery

I can’t believe baby Audrey is 11 months old already! And I’ve let all this time go by without showing off her beautiful, mostly handmade nursery.

I had every intention of debuting her nursery on the blog before she was even born but we didn’t put the finishing touches on the room until the last minute. Then she arrived and…well the next thing I know 11 months went by! Where did the time go?

We used the same Pottery Barn bedding that Sophie had when she was a baby, but I didn’t want the rooms to be identical so we painted the walks a pale green instead of the pink we’d chosen for Sophie. It’s really pretty in person but didn’t photograph very well, and looks gray in some of these photos.

Anyway, without further ado here is the beautiful room Audrey calls home.

Little Bird Nursery Curtains

I made the curtains myself. The fabric came from Joann’s and it coordinates very well with the Pottery Barn Penelope bedding in the nursery. My inspiration was this tutorial, but I modified several things. I used grosgrain ribbon instead of fabric sashes which is easier and prettier in my opinion!

In the tutorial, the top border is the same color as the back liner of the curtain. I wanted a pink border but didn’t want the whole back of the curtain to be pink (just in case you could see if from the outside) so I lined the back of the curtain with white but did a 4″ pink border at the top for an accent color, which gets folded over to the front when you make the pocket for the rod.

I added a gathered grosgrain ribbon to the edge of the top border using the new gathering foot I recently purchased.

The tutorial attaches all four tie-up sashes to the front of the curtain, and then flips two of the ties over the curtain rod to come down the back side of the curtain to create the ties. I preferred not to have the back ties looped over the rod so I attached the ribbons that run down the back side of the curtain to the back in the seam between the white lining and the pink border, as shown below.

I love the way they turned out!

Birds on a Branch Wall Decor

One of the final touches we added was the wall decor over the crib. I debated for the longest time about what to hang over the crib! I really wanted something unique. I finally decided to sew little birds and mount them on a tree branch that we painted white. This is my favorite part of the room.

I was inspired by a picture I saw on Etsy of a small branch mounted on the wall with a bird on it, but decided to do something more large scale to be the focal point on the wall above the crib. We cut the branch out of a tree in the backyard and spray painted it white. Robbie mounted it on the wall with some screws.

I used a free template I found online to sew the birds. Then I sewed the birds to the branches using a curved needle and thread. Here are my feathered friends:

I got the birdhouse at a craft store for $1 and painted it to coordinate with the crib bedding. Here is the before and after:

It took a long time to envision exactly what I wanted over the crib, but I’m really happy that I came up with something original and unique.

I used the Katie Bird pattern to make the larger “Mama” bird.  It was simple to make and turned out so cute. The pink and green fabric is Heather Bailey Nicey Jane Pocketbook Pink which I got at Fabric.com and the green fabric came from Walmart.

Final Touches

I hand-painted the wall plates to match the bedding, as I have done in Sophie’s room as well. You can see Sophie’s wall plates on her Big Girl Room Reveal.

I transformed some decorative birds I found at TJ Maxx with new paint and fabric to coordinate with the room.

The nightstand was formerly a dark espresso color that we painted white and added a glass knob to make it more feminine. The glider, crib and changing table were all pieces from Sophie’s nursery that we were able to reuse.

The framed silhouette of Audrey over the changing table was made by my friend and her former preschool teacher Amber. She surprised me with it on my birthday.

I bought this “A” initial at Michael’s and used hot glue to attach a ribbon to it for hanging.

Also hanging on the wall is a framed handprint / footprint impression we made when Audrey was a newborn.

I can’t imagine a nicer place for baby Audrey to call home!
