10 of the Best Herbs to Plant in Your Garden
These are my recommendations for the top 10 best herbs to plant in your garden. With this group of herbs, you’ll be sure to have everything you need to make a variety of different dishes!
Basil
Basil is one of the most popular herbs because it can be used in such a wide variety of dishes. It’s perfect for pasta, pizza, Italian recipes, and salads. One of my favorite summer appetizers is Tomato, Mozzarella and Basil Bruschetta.
Oregano
Oregano is a great choice to pair with meats, vegetables and pasta dishes. It’s also good with Italian recipes and pizza. I can’t wait to try this Honey Oregano Pork Chops recipe with fresh oregano from our garden.
Rosemary
Rosemary is good in pork and poultry dishes, including this delicious Chicken with Creamy Rosemary Sauce recipe. We also pair it with parmesan cheese as a topping on fresh baked bread. It can get fairly large so will need frequent trimming. Rosemary will thrive year round.
Chives
Chives have a mild onion flavor and can be used in soups, potatoes, and fish. They are also tasty in a garden salad. Chives are the perfect garnish for these Loaded Scalloped Potatoes with Bacon and Cheddar.
Dill
Dill pairs well with fresh salads and soups as well as seafood. We love to add it to homemade chicken salad. Dill is also used to make pickles, as you can probably tell by the name.
Cilantro
Cilantro is used mainly in Mexican, Indian and Asian dishes. Try it in this Cilantro Lime Salsa. Use cilantro soon after cutting as fresh cilantro is more flavorful than dried.
Parsley
Parsley has a mild flavor so can be used in a variety of different dishes, including this Garlic Parsley Chicken. You can combine it with basil to make pesto. It can also be used as a simple garnish.
Thyme
Thyme is a staple in Mediterranean cuisine and is also good paired with meats, seafood, tomatoes, beans and even omelets. A recipe you’ll want to try is Lemon and Thyme Roasted Chicken. Thyme is a hardy herb that will stay fresh for quite awhile after snipping.
Sage
Sage is a stuffing herb that commonly used in beef and pork recipes, including these yummy Pork Chops and Sage Butter Sauce. It has a very fragrant smell and intense flavor so use it sparingly. Sage is best suited for heavier dishes with rich ingredients that won’t be overpowered by such a bold flavor.
Mint
Mint is great added to tea and cocktails (hello Mojitos & Mint Julips!), as well as a garnish for desserts. It can also be used to make homemade bath products such as soap, body scrub and bath bombs. It can be invasive so keep it trimmed so it doesn’t take over your herb garden.
