Pool Noodle Seahorse

It’s been a looooong time since I’ve posted a kid’s craft on the blog but this pool noodle seahorse too cute not to share. We don’t do as many arts and crafts at our home as we used to. The kids are older and quite honestly I’m tired of cleaning up the mess craft projects make! But luckily, our local library has an amazing summer program for kids with lots of fun (and free!) activities.

The library’s July kid’s calendar had an event called Make a Seahorse Buddy with the vague description “Make a giant ridable seahorse buddy with materials provided by the library.” Audrey was full of questions: “How do you make a ridable sea horse? How big will it be? What are we going to make it from? Can I take it in the pool?” I honestly had no idea, but I convinced her to go and see what it was all about.

The first thing we saw when we arrived was a pile of pool noodles on the floor, and about a dozen kids who had already claimed one and were wildly having a sword fight with them. Audrey grabbed the last purple noodle (her favorite color) before anyone else could get it. Before the kids started knocking art supplies all over the room, the librarian took over and explained how to make a ridable seahorse from a pool noodle.

How to Make a Seahorse with a Pool Noodle

To make the seahorse’s head, bend the first 8 to 10 inches of the noodle down and secure it with a string. Then use any and all embellishments you want to decorate your seahorse. The library provided pipe cleaners, feathers, wasabi tape, sequins, google eyes, felt and tissue paper. Audrey opted to make ears from felt and antenna and a mane from pipe cleaners. She curled the pipe cleaners around a paint brush and stuck them right into the pool noodle. No glue needed! She used four colorful feathers to make wings. Then she drew a nose with a permanent marker and finished it off with google eyes. It turned out really cute, and best of all she had fun making it!
